| Notes |
- 1871 census: at 14 & 15 Bridge Street, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales, (the same house as his parents), Thomas (head, 24, puddler, born Rhymney, Monmouthshire), Anne (wife, 21, born Cefn, Brecknockshire) and John (son, 5 months, born Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan).
In 1881, Thomas, now a widower, and John his son lived with his parents (qv) In Stockton.
1891 census: at 19 Campbell Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, Thomas (head, widower, 42, puddler, born Ryk-- (Rhymney), Breckonshire), John (son, 20, ironworks labourer, born Merthyr, Glamorganshire) and three lodgers. The latter include William THOMPSON (26), who was lodging with Thomas in 1911; Rachel SCRAFTON (married, 31, born Newbottle, Durham), who was to become Thomas's wife (whether they married is unclear *) and Annie SCRAFTON (13, born Middlesboro, Yorkshire), who was presumably Rachel's daughter.
In 1881 Rachel (married, 22) and her daughter Ann (2) appeared as SCRAFTON as visitors with Jane H BROWN at 40 Elliott Street, Stockton (very strangely, the same group of people also appear at 40 Joseph Street, Stockton!). 20 years earlier, Rachel lived with her parents Richard and Jane Hannah BROWN in Philadelphia Lane, Newbottle. In Q2 1877 Rachel BROWN married William SCRAFTON (Middlesbrough 9d/812). I've found no indication of what became of William SCRAFTON.
1901 census: lodging at 10 Campbell Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, Thomas HILL (boarder, 49, puddler in ironworks, born Rummey (Rhymney), Wales) and Rachael HILL * (boarder, 39, born Newbottle, Durham).
1911 census: at 45 Lumley Street, Stockton on Tees (4 rooms), Thomas (head, 61, married, labourer, engineering works, worker, born Wales in Rhymny), Rachel (wife, 50, married 6 years *, born Newbottle, Co Durham), William (brother, 66, single, labourer, steel plant, worker, born Gloucestershire), John (son, 37, widower, [the entry '8 children, 5 living 3 died' is crossed through], puddler iron foundry, rolling mills, worker, born Merthyr, Glamorgan), Abigail (granddaughter, 15, single, born Stockton), Sidney Thomas (grandson, 11, school, born Stockton), John (grandson, 7, school, born Stockton) and a lodger, William THOMPSON, 49, single, born Stockton)
Form signed Thomas Hill.
* in 1911, Rachel said she had been married 6 years. They both said 'M' (married) in 1901. No trace of a marriage has been found though. It appears that Rachel died in 1912: the death was registered as Rachel SCRAFTON, which confirms that she didn't marry Thomas Hill.
Not only did Thomas Hill become Rachel SCRAFTON's husband (whether legally or not), his son John Hill married Rachel's daughter Ann(ie) Elizabeth SCRAFTON. See John's notes.
