    Notes
    • The 1850 US Federal Census of Richmond City, Henrico County, Virginia, USA includes John Tinsley, aged 15, carpenter, born Virginia, with "M", ie mulatto, as his color. This entry might refer to John Henry, although the age doesn't agree with what I have as his approximate birth year, 1822.

Per G Petrin, J H Tinsley arrived in Australia in 1852 on the 'Epaminondas'. Two items from the internet and one from a book support this:
      1. Found on the Trove website, an article printed in The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) on 26 November 1852, announcing the arrival from New York of the 'Epaminondas' bearing a total of 144 passengers.
      2. Found at findmypast.co.uk, a handwritten list of the names of all the passengers on the 'Epaminondas', captained by Luis L Condry, arrived at Port Phillip from New York in November 1852. The last page of the list includes J.D. Tinsley* (coloured) and J H Tinsley (coloured). The same page also confirms the number of passengers as 144 ie 140 adults and 4 children.
      * John Henry Tinsley's brother, James Dailey Tinsley, who lived from 1820 to 1854.
      3. According to Karolyn Smardz Frost's 2017 "Steal Away Home", the Tinsley brothers and four friends left Toronto on 31 Jul 1852, journeyed to New York and there joined the 'Epaminondas'.

John Henry Tinsley, hairdresser, appeared in the 1903 Electoral Roll for Gipps, Melbourne at 14_, Brown's Lane, Melbourne.

Tim Murphy, a descendant, has discovered that after his wife Julia Ann died, John Henry met and partnered Caroline WATHEN, who had emigrated to Australia in 1865 (see her Notes for details). John Henry and Caroline had three children, two of whom died in infancy. The third, Emily Rose, married (as TINSLEY rather than WATHEN) in 1904.

September 2023: having paid for professional genealogy research, Tim Murphy has discovered details of John Henry's death and burial. An extract from the researcher's report follows:
"An initial search did not find any evidence of the death of John Henry Tinsley, but in the newspaper account of the wedding of his daughter Emily Tinsley to Jim M’Neil on 16 November 1904 (Ref: The Lilydale Express and Yarra Glen, Wandin Yallock, Upper Yarra, Healesville and Ringwood Chronicle newspaper, Friday 18 November 1904, page 2) there was no mention of the bride’s father, instead Mr. F.W. Perrin had the honour of giving away Miss Emily Tinsley. This would indicate that Emily’s father was no longer in her life and could have passed away. A further search in Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria online index, under various spelling variations of the Tinsley surname, located his death registered under the misspelling of John Tunsley. He died at the Melbourne Hospital (later known as the Royal Melbourne Hospital) on 9 July 1903. His age was incorrectly stated as 71 years, but his birthplace of America and his occupation as a hairdresser confirm that this was your John Tinsley. The informant who registered the death was a staff member of the hospital, not a family member, so any errors on the certificate would be due to their lack of knowledge. A copy of the death certificate is attached.

The death certificate stated that he was buried at the Melbourne Cemetery which in 1903 would have been the one located in Carlton. The name of John Tinsley (or Tunsley) did not appear in the Melbourne General Cemetery alphabetical register listing, 31 December 1995 which means that he was very likely buried as a pauper. His wife was not listed either, and I had checked under the names Carol Tinsley (or Tunsley) and Carol Wathen. You could try contacting the Melbourne General Cemetery and enquire as to whether they have any further details about his burial in their records especially amongst the pauper burials."
