| Notes |
- William was a carpenter of Barham in 1814 (when his daughter Mary was baptised) and 1816; a farmer of Barham in 1818 and of Elham between 1823 and 1830.
1841 census: in Postling Lane, Postling, Kent, William (50, farmer), Susan (48), Caroline (14), John (14) and Thomas (11).
Peter Marshall August 2007:
"One other historical fact about William Laker. He appears on the 1843 Tithe Map for Postling, Kent as occupier of:-
24 Malthouse Farm
25 Malthouse Meadow
26 & 27 Part of Chalky Field
28 Part of Tollsfoot Field.
I have been to Postling and it is a lovely village that has barely changed in a hundred years. However the soil is wet, heavy, clay. Farming could not have been easy."
1851 census (indexed as COKER by ancestry.com): in Postling Lees, Postling, Kent, William (62, farmer of 55 acres), Susannah (61) and John (24, farmer's son). Married daughter Mary PREBBLE and her husband James plus four children were next door.
1861 census: at Vents Farm, Postling, Kent, William (72, farmer of 14 acres) and Susan (71). And a visitor Sarah Minter (unmarried, 52, born Barham, Kent [Susan(na)'s sister]). At nearby Malthouse Farm were John Laker (33, farmer of 50 acres employing 1 man and 1 boy, born Elham, Kent), his wife Mary A Laker (27, born Aldington, Kent) and children William (6, scholar), Elizabeth (4, scholar), Margaret (2) and John (1), all born in Postling.
Buried in Postling aged 78.
Peter Marshall August 2007: "William and Susanna had a grandchild (Helen) Mary Laker through their son George. Mary Laker wrote several books but the most interesting is Vulcan Daughters which tells of her early years in the early 1900's, growing up as a blacksmith's daughter in Headcorn, Kent. Also contains quite a few photos of the family."
March 2008: Peter Marshall has obtained a copy of the death certificate: it shows that William died on 25th March 1867 at Postling, Kent aged 77. Occupation was Farmer. Cause of death was " Heart disease - Certified" and the death was reported by X the mark of Sarah Webb present at the death.
