Notes |
- The 'Bevolking Zeeuwse Eilanden 1811' records that John, identified as 'John Minter, junior' then said to be 28, was living in Brouwershaven in 1811 and had lived in the municipality since 1803. John's father John was also in Holland in 1811 - see his Notes.
John must then have returned to England to get married, after which he and Jane returned to Holland and had several children, most of whom died either in infancy or as young children.
It's not known when John and Jane returned to England but it must have been before 1850, when Jane died, in Folkestone. The Dutch Zeeuwen Gezocht has several mortgage and cadastral documents dating between 1827 and 1832; it's not clear whether they all relate to John (one or more could relate to his father).
On the records of his childrens' deaths John is variously described as sea trader, merchant and 'private'.
According to Geo. Warden Hayes' book "Memoirs of The Minter Family", John, together with his three brothers-in-law Thomas Holman, John Holman and Richard Hobday, was one of the "Four Brothers", who traded as 'Minter & Co' merchants from Flushing, Holland (but who were in reality smugglers) and whose ship, the eponymous "Vier Broers", was involved in 1823 in a sea fight with the Customs cutter "Badger". The Hayes book contains an account of the fight and outcome.
June 2013: Jan Pedersen has found another book which describes the 'Four Brother' incident in detail. It's called 'Reminiscences of Old Folkestone Smugglers'. The author John English originally published this in his paper the Folkestone Express. Reprints of the book are available today.
March 2014: Robert J Spooner emails from New Zealand:
"My 5th grandfather William Gibson was in 1825 living in Flushing , Zealand, Holland.
I have located a newspapers article in the Rotterdam Courant
which said that on the order of John Minter JR the Rotterdam High Court had William Gibson arrested and imprisoned in order to recover a debt of 17,768 guilders. William Gibson escaped and went to Cork. Later in English paper The Courier the same notice was printed and a week later a letter from William Gibson in response saying he had action through the English courts against Mr Minster for 78,000L."
At some point, John was a Jurat of Folkestone.
John's death was announced in the Kentish Gazette Tuesday 3 January 1860:
"Death: MINTER. Dec. 23, in Mill Lane, Folkestone, John Minter Esq aged 75 years."
Monumental Inscription: "Jane, wife of John Minter, Jurat of this town, died 12 Feb 1850, age 64, left 2 sons and 3 daughters - Ann, Jane, Sarah, David and Bartholomew. Also the above John Minter died 23 Dec 1859, age 75".
When their stillborn child arrived in 1813 John, age given as 30, and Jane were living in Brouwershaven.
When son Thomas was (still)born in 1818 John's age was stated to be 34, Jane's as 43 (an error, should be 33). John's occupation koopman (merchant).
When their twins Thomas and Richard were born in 1819, John's age was entered as 35, Jane's as 34. John's occupation was koopman (merchant) and their address was 20 wijk D, Vlissingen. John's age and occupation are the same on the 1819 death record of daughter Mary.
When daughter Margaret was (still)born in 1820 John's age was stated to be 36 , Jane's as 35. John's occupation koopman (merchant), Jane's huisvrouw (housewife).
When son David was born in 1822 John's age was stated to be 38, Jane's as 37 and their address 58 wijk H, Vlissingen; John's occupation koopman (merchant).
When daughter Elizabeth was (still)born in 1823 John's age was stated to be 29 (an error, should be 39), Jane's as 38. John's occupation zeehandelaar (translation not found).
When Mary was born and died in 1825 John's age was stated to be 40, Jane's as 39 and their address 57 wijk H, Vlissingen; John's occupation koopman (merchant).
When son Bartholomew was born in 1827 John's age was stated to be 43, Jane's as 42 and their address 57 wijk H, Vlissingen; John's occupation koopman (merchant).
1839 Pigot's Directory of Kent: John Minter, brewer, Kings Bridge Street, Folkestone. Entry for John Minter, coal merchant, same address probably also refers.
1841 census: in Beach Street, Folkestone, John (55, brewer), Jane (55) and Bartw [Bartholomew], 10.
Appeared in the 1845 Post Office Directory of Kent (Kelly's) as a brewer of Kingsbridge Street, Folkestone.
1851 census: in Guildhall Street, Folkestone: John (66, retired brewer), second wife Alice (43), son Bartholomew (23, custom house clerk), Alice Elgar (13) and Sarah (8). Although Alice and Sarah are listed as Minters, they were born before John married in 1850 so were probably Alice's children from her first marriage.
Appeared in the 1852 Post Office Directory of Kent (Kelly's) under Gentry, Mr John Minter, Guildhall Street, Folkestone.
Appeared in the Directory of Kent, Melville & Co, 1858 under Gentry as Mr John Minter (Senior), Mill Lane, Folkestone.
1861 census: John had died in 1859; his widow Alice was living in a private house in Mill Lane, Folkestone with her daughter Sarah ELGAR (18, unmarried), and her daughter Alice (23), who, because the latter had married her mother's stepson Bartholomew, was also her mother's (step) daughter-in-law. Also there were Bartholomew and Alice's daughter Jane (5).
The death was announced in the Kentish Chronicle of 31 Dec 1859 : Dec 22, in Mill-lane, John Minter Esq, sen, aged 75 years.
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966:
19 March 1860.
