  Notes	1851 census: in Happisburgh, Norfolk (all PAYNE), John (26, ag lab, born Norwich), Maria (25, born East Ruston) and Amelia (sic - clearly a mistake for Hannah Maria) (3, born Walcott). 1861 census - John was with his parents in a cottage in Walcot: (all PAYNE), William (69, coal meter, born Tuttington, Norfolk), Elizabeth (wife, 69, born Tuttington, Norfolk), John (son, widower, 35, fish merchant, born Norwich) and Anna Maria (granddaughter, 13, scholar, born Walcott). Sarah BALLS, a witness at John's 1864 marriage, lived in the next property. 1871 census: in Ridlington, Norfolk: John PAYNE (44, fish hawker, born St pauls, Norwich), Mary Ann PAYNE (wife, 33, born East Ruston) and John NEALE (son, 9, born Walcot). It's unclear who was John NEALE's father was but he appears to have been born before Mary Ann married John PAYNE.
