- Bertie joined the National Union of Railwaymen on 28 May 1914.
Bertie was a Private number 515520 in the London Regiment (London Scottish) 1st/14th Bn. He joined the regiment at Derby on 14 April 1917. At that date he was 22 years 11 months old, a station porter living at 49 Cross Road, Unstone, Sheffield. Next of kin was Rachael (Joseph having been crossed out) Minter, mother, of 192 Great College Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, London. He served in France from 17 July 1917 and was killed in action on 24 November 1917. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
