| Notes |
- Entered on Seamans' Register for 1836, serving on the "St Hilda", "Barlow"and the "La Bonne Mare".
October 2009: The assumption that this Henry married Ann Elizabeth NASH is based (a) on the fact that Ann was in 1841 living at the same address (it's difficult to work out whether in the same house) as Inmith Nash (50, coastguard), his wife and family, (b) the fact that Henry was also a coastguard, previously in the Navy) and (c) the fact that both names appear on daughter Eliza Ann's birth certificate.
1841 census: living with William & Elizabeth Morling at Peads Farm, Leiston *, Suffolk, Henry (29, navy, not born Suffolk). Wife Ann (20) and daughter Eliza (3 months) were at 51 Tower, Bexhill, Sussex, a Martello Tower that has since been lost to the sea.
* Leiston is a couple of miles away from the Sizewell Gap Coastguard Station where Henry was stationed in 1841.
Henry's early career as a Boatman in the Coastguard can be traced from ADM 175/06, one of a series of documents held in the National Archive and available as free downloads:
1. 38 Tower (a Martello tower) at Pett Level near Hastings, Sussex. Henry arrived here on 7 Oct 1836 from HMS Jupiter and stayed until 25 Aug 1837. This is confirmed by an entry in ADM 175/97, Coastguard Nominations 1827 - 1840.
2. Enchantress (an 80ft sloop beached in Old Rye Harbour). From 25 Aug 1837 to 28 Aug 1838.
3. Hastings. From 28 Aug 1838 to 29 May 1839.
4. 55 Tower (a Martello tower) at Normans Bay, Pevensey Levels, East Sussex. 29 May 1839 to 7 May 1840.
5. Sizewell Gap, Suffolk. From 7 May 1840 to 28 Apr 1842.
ADM 175/100 (Alphabetical Seamans Book 1830 - 1849) has an entry for Henry Minter, boatman, of Sizewell Gap. The entry indicates that he was sent to Rathmullen, Co. Donegal in April 1842. At that point he was still a Boatman in the Coastguard. Henry remained in Ireland and evidently moved his family there. He served in a number of Coastguard stations - the following details are extracted from documents in the the ADM 175 series: ADM 175/18 - Ireland 1827 - 48 and ADM 175/19 - Ireland 1845 - 62. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any later documents.
In several of the records Henry is noted as being 'Good of service'.
There is no entry for Henry in ADM 175/102 - Removals 1858 - 1868. It's therefore not clear when he retired from the Coastguard service.
No trace of the death of Henry has been found in the UK death index, suggesting that he remained in Ireland until he died. But although I've found his wife's death, Henry's death remains undiscovered.
