| Notes |
- 1911 census: as Daisy N. Minter, 25, a domestic, born Isle of Thanet, Kent, Daisy was at 47 West Street, Faversham, Kent, shown as 'sept sister' of Charles Butt SKEATES (head, 32, married, master baker, born Willstone (?), Kent. Charles's son William Charles SKEATES (9 months, born Teynham, Kent) was also there. Charles must have been the son of Daisy's father's second wife, Fanny Adelaide SKEATES.
On 26 September 1909, a Daisy Nellie Minter a housemaid (domestic) of Claxfield, Lynsted, Kent, Daisy gave birth to Grace Emma Minter. The birth was registered on 4 November 1909 by Stephen George, the registrar for Faversham, sub-district Teynham. There seems little doubt that Grace Emma was Daisy E Minter's daughter. It would appear that Daisy didn't wish to keep Grace: at the time of the 1911 census Grace Emma Minter was being looked after as a nurse child by Michael and Emmeline E DOYLE at 13 St Radigunds Road, Dover, along with two other nurse children. Michael and Emmeline had been married for 8 years and had had no children of their own.
In July 2011, Christine Gardiner emailed as follows:
"... my great great aunt Harriett and her husband adopted a little girl called Grace Emma Minter in the early 1900s, Grace's mother was apparently called Daisy Minter, and in the 1911 census, little Grace is living as a "nurse child" with a couple called Doyle in Kent.... I don't know exactly when Grace was adopted, as the only photo I have of her is when she was about 15, and on the back my aunt had written "Grace, my darling adopted daughter who I know is in heaven". It wasn't until I managed to obtain my great aunt's death certificate and burial records that I found out by chance that she was in fact buried with Grace Emma Minter Hignell (my great aunt's surname). I then realised that this was the Grace in the photo I had. I sent off for her death certificate and found that poor Grace Minter Hignell had died of TB aged 19 in 1929 at my aunt's house [11 Blackshaw Road] in Tooting, London. She was a shorthand typist."
