      The births of Abraham's first five children do not seem to have been registered.

      1841 census: in Thorpe Road, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, Abraham (20, ag lab), Hannah (20), Henry (3 months) and Emily (10 months). It's likely, since only one Emily was baptised in Thorpe in 1840, that this is the illegitimate daughter of Abraham's sister Rachel. This would also explain the otherwise impossible age gap between Henry and Emily.

      1851 census: in Mill Hill, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, Abraham (31, ag lab), Hannah (30, labourer's wife), Henry (9), Maria (8), George (6), Susan (4), Sarah (2) and Robert (4 months).

      1861 census: in Thorpe Green, Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, Abraham (41, ag lab), Hannah (40), George (16, ag lab), Susan (14), Sarah (12), Robert (10), Charles (8), Mary Ann (6) and Elizabeth (3). Although only 10 and 8, Robert and Charles are described as agricultural labourers.
