His mother's name is shown as Flora Celia Minter (domestic servant). 1921 census: at 7, Bloggs Yard Row 28, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, Charles SHIPTON (head, 41y 10m, married, born Hammersmith, London, labourer, out of work, was at Air Staion, Great Yarmouth), Maud Lola SHIPTON (wife, 35y 2m, married, born Beighton, near Acle, Norfolk, home duties) and Harold E MINTER (adopted son, age 4, both parents alive, born Dovercourt). 1939 Register: at 2 Queen Anne's Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk MINTER, Harold E born 2 Jun 1917, Corporation labourer/---- seaman MINTER later SMITH, Joyce E born 12 Jul 1918, housewife --- 1 closed record --- The Commonwealth War Graves website shows that a Harold Ernest Minter, aged 23, a seaman in the Royal Naval Patrol Service on HM Trawler 'Pelton', service number LT/JX 165981, died on 23 December 1940. He is remembered on the Lowestoft Naval memorial, panel 2, column 3. Another website says that the Pelton was built in 1925 and taken over by the Admiralty in August 1939. Displacement: 358 tons. She was torpedoed and sunk by the German motor torpedo boat S-28 off Great Yarmouth on 24 December 1940 (slight date discrepancy). The CWGC website details include the statement that Harold was the foster son of Charles and Maud SHIPTON and the husband of Joyce Evelyn Minter of Salhouse, Norfolk. The Times (London, England), Tuesday, Feb 11, 1941; pg. 7; Issue 48847 records Harold, seaman, as 'missing presumed killed'.
