1844 Thompson's London Commercial Dirctory: Wm. - greengrocer, 11 Broadwall, Blackfriars.
William was a greengrocer of Broad Wall when children Eliza, Joseph and William were baptised in 1842 and 1848.
1851 census: at 11 Broadwall, Christchurch, Southwark, Surrey, William (35, greengrocer), Emma (37, at home, born Stanway, Essex), Charles (11, scholar), Eliza (9, scholar), William (5, scholar) and Joseph (3, scholar). All four children were said to have been born in Christchurch, Surrey.
Post Office Directories 1856, 1857, 1858 & 1859 list William Minter, van proprietor, 11 Broadwall, Blackfriars.
1861 census: at The Clarence Inn, Holy Trinity, Colchester, Essex, William (46, innkeeper), Emma (46, born Thorpe-le-Soken), William (16, carpenter) and Joseph (13, scholar).
See http://www.camulos.com/inns/inns5nto5s.pdf for a description of The Clarence, now known as The Purple Dog. The description notes that "Local newspapers in 1857 recorded that the said William Minter was refused a renewal of the licence of the Clarence, Trinity Street, 'it being a most notorious house'." Could there be a connection here with William's son Charles's "loathsome disease", which, it was alleged, was communicated by Charles to the victim of the alleged rape in 1862?
Another Colchester pub, the Abbey Gate in Stanwell Street, was run by William's brother-in-law William Tyler and his wife Elizabeth Tyler nee Minter.
