    Notes
    • 1851 census: the entry for George (44, born Shelton, Norfolk, visitor or widower - it's difficult to make out) is struck through and noted 'See table C. C Hale'. The entry for occupation reads "Wanderer(?) in Field Barns &c in the Parish of Palgrave Sunday Mar 30 1851"

Known as 'Vagabond George', his story is told in the book about Wortham by the Rev Richard Cobbold, written in the 1860s.

John J. Minter writes: Another Minter researcher - Dick Moore - warns us against sentimentality regarding George the vagabond. Cobbold makes him sound like a romantic figure, but Dick has found George's gaol records - one in 1846 shows that George's clothes were "hat, coat, waistcoats, trousers, boots, shirt, handkerchief" - but for his 5th offence his clothes are simply "rags". In the book Cobbold shows George's brother William (bap. c. 1799) to be a hard-working family man, but HE did 14 days hard labour for "leaving his family chargeable to the parish of Wortham", he probably just couldn't manage - this area of England was one of the poorest in the country during the "hungry 1840s". Sending father to gaol, now that would help, wouldn't it!!!! His prison note shows that he had some education at Diss Sunday School. Vagabond George married Sarah in 1827, she was from Palgrave and had already had two fatherless children. They had Eliza in 1828 (bap. 1830). Sarah died in 1833, and daughter Eliza in 1839, aged 11. These events began his general decline. George had intelligence - and acquired pompous language from somewhere - Cobbold describes how George was "crazy but harmless".
