- Living at Butchery Lane with parents in 1841.
Admitted as a freeman of Canterbury on 29 Jul 1844 by copy of his father as a butcher. A butcher of Butchery lane in 1845 (Kelly's Post Office Directory). Listed in the Canterbury Poll of 1848 as of St Mary Northgate. A pork butcher of 42 Biggin Street, Dover in 1849 (listed in the Williams Directory of that year). Appeared in the 1852 Post Office Directory of Kent (Kelly's) as a pork butcher of Biggin Street, Dover. Jury service at Dover in 1853. Appeared in the Directory of Kent, Melville & Co, 1858 as William H Minter, butcher, Market Place, Dover. A cowkeeper at Brixton between 1862 and 1870 and at Epsom in 1874. Had dairy business later in Westbourne Grove, London before selling to the Express dairy Co. Retired to live at Twickenham and later at Bowes Park.
The London Gazette of 2 December 1845 carries notices in which William and his brother Filmer are "hereby required to appear in Court before Edward Holroyd, Esq. the Commissioner acting in the matter of the said Petition, on the llth day of December instant, at one. of the clock in the afternoon precisely, at the Court of Bankruptcy, in Basinghall-street, in the city of London, for his first examination touching his debts, estate, and effects, and to be furth'er dealt with according to the provisions of the said Statutes'
A later edition announced that Edward Holroyd would make a final order on 22 December 1845.
1851 census (indexed as MINSTER by ancestry): at 42 Biggin street, St Marys, Dover, William (29, pork butcher), Mary (24), Charles (3) and Lavinia (1), together with brother Robert (22, grocer) and 2 servants.
Appeared in Kelly's Directory 1855 as a pork putcher of Market Place, Dover.
1861 census: at Camberwell Lane, late Jackson House, Camberwell, Surrey, William (39, cowkeeper) Mary (32), Charles (13), not stated [Lavinia] (11), John (9), Amelia (7), Edward K (5), Kate (1), Sarah BARTLETT (28, sister in law) and Mary (26, sister).
Listed in Post Office Directory, Surrey 1862 & 1866 as W H Minter, dairyman, corner Sussex Road and Coldharbour Lane, Brixton.
In 1863 William was the victim of embezzlement by his servant Alfred Schofield. Schofield was tried at the Surrey Quarter Sessions on 5 June 1865 for 'Feloniously embezzling divers sums of William Minter, his master.' There were three separate charges, the sums involved being 11 shillings and eight pence halfpenny; 1 penny and 2 pence. After pleading guilty on all three charges, Schofield was given 6 months hard labour in Wandsworth prison.
The above came from Paul Marsh in March 2013. Paul's wife is Alfred Schofield's 4x granddaughter. The court report appears a document found by the Surrey History Centre, original document ref. QS2/7/1865 - Indictments, 1865.
