| Notes |
- Robert's ancestry is unknown. It's possible that he was the son of Matthew Minter, who was born in 1728 and is in the Eyke section. Gordon Minter wrote apropos Matthew Minter:
"married Elizabeth Block in Wickham Market on 14 June 1763. They must have then moved to Orford as that parish issued a settlement certificate to the parish of Wickham Market on 3 October 1763 accepting full responsibility for Matthew and Elizabeth. Matthew is described as a hawker. We have found no record of any children."
Gordon wrote later (in August 2016):
"The transcriptions of the baptism registers for Wickham Market are available on Find My Past from 1538 to 1911. I currently have a subscription and have searched the transcriptions.
There is no Robert Minter baptised in Wickham Market around that time. As far as I can see from the link that you sent me, there is no evidence that he was born or baptised in Wickham Market. However, if Robert was indeed born to Matthew and Elizabeth around 1761, he would have been illegitimate as they did not marry until two years later. I have therefore searched also for a Robert Block but found no-one of this name. Indeed, there are no baptisms with that surname in Wickham Market for 10 years either side of that date. There are also no Minter baptisms in Wickham Market before Elizabeth's in 1775. It is likely that Matthew and Elizabeth had other children before their daughter Elizabeth but it looks as though they were somewhere else for the years following their marriage."
Some of the information about this family was obtained from the Genes Reunited tree of Debra Jackson.
The 1830 Suffolk Poll Book has an entry for Robert Minter, of Wickham Market. (Source Ancestry.com, UK, Poll Books and Electoral Registers, 1538-1893).
1841 census: in Upper Street, Wickham Market, Suffolk, Robert (80, [occupation difficult to read, possibly brewery man]), Susan, wife (70) and Ann Jennings (15, female servant).
Robert was a schoolteacher in Wickham Market. Evidently a person of some standing he was named as the executor of a number of Wills:
in 1819, William Felby of Wickham Market
in 1820, Thomas Townsend and John Willis
in 1830, Legent Alldiss
and, possibly, Mary Studd.
Robert's own Will dated 9 July 1844 can be found at www.norfolksources.norfolk.gov. Points from it follow:
- Executors were John Whitmore of Wickham Market, millwright (refered to in the codicil as 'my friend') and Isaac Churchyard of Bing Hall, Petistree, Suffolk, gentleman.
- All property was left on trust to the executors, to be sold when the yougest of Robert's grandchildren reach 21.
- Silver spoons and plate were to be divided among the grandchildren on reaching 21.
- Granddaughter Harriet Minter was to receive the painting of Robert's late wife.
- All household goods etc were to be left on trust to the executors, to be sold.
- The beneficiaries of the Will were 'Harriet Minter and Susan Minter daughters of my late son Charles Churchyard Minter and Susan Margaret Minter the daughter of my late son Isaac Minter.
A codicil was added on 30 November 1846 in which Robert was described as a Wine merchant. It left £5 to Harriet Minter over and above the other bequests. John Whitmore also received additional bequests. Isaac Churchyard was to receive £50; £14 to Harriet Minter; £13 (each) to be put in the Woodbridge Savings Bank for grandaughters Susan Minter and Susan Margaret Minter on attaining 21.
The Will was proved on 17 April 1848 and administration given to John Whitmore.
Buried at age 86. Robert's gravestone at Wickham Market (photographed by Tinch Minter in February 2010) reads as follows (there is a piece missing from the right-hand edge of the stone so the year of death is incomplete).
