Notes |
- findmypast.co.uk (ex. Suffolk Baptism Index part 3) has a record of the baptisms of: - George Minter on 19 April 1826 at Ipswich St Clement, father William Flood (innkeeper), mother Charlotte Susanna, of Back Hamlet, Ipswich.
- Mary Ann Minter on 4 November 1827 (born 16 August 1827) at Ipswich St Clement, father William Flood (innkeeper), mother Charlotte Susanna, of Back Hamlet, Ipswich.
These must have been children who died, especially since the George Minter listed as William Flood's son was, according to findmypast, baptised in 1830.
When son Henry Isaac was christened in 1834, William Flood Minter was a mess master at the Cavalry Barracks.
When daughter Charlotte Susannah and Sarah and (second) son George were baptised William Flood Minter was described as an innkeeper of Back Hamlet, Ipswich (per findmypast.co.uk).
When daughter Martha Ann baptised in 1836 William Flood Minter was described as a messman at Barracks (per findmypast.co.uk).
Pigot's Directory of Suffolk 1823 - 24 has an entry for Minter, Wm. Flood, Ship Inn, Ipswich.
From the London Gazette 28 February 1832:
The Matters of the PETITIONS and SCHEDULES of the PRISONERS hereinafter named (the same having been filed in the Court) are appointed to be heard as follows :
At the Court-House, at Great Yarmouth, in the County of Norfolk, on the 22d day of March 1832, at Ten o'Clock in the Forenoon precisely.
[among others] William Flood Minter, late of Ipswich, in the County of Suffolk, Innkeeper.
When his son Thomas Hartley Minter was baptised, William Flood Minter was described as a messman in the 69th Regiment. This was the South Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot which later became the 2nd Battalion of the Welsh Regiment.
'William Flood Minter, Grove Street, London' appears in the 1841 Poll Book for Ipswich, in the section for Capel St Mary (Source London Metropolitan Archives and Guildhall Library, UK, Poll Books and Electoral Registers, 1538-1893, at Ancestry, Oct 2012).
William Flood Minter, Grocer of Hackney, Middlesex made a will on 4 November 1850.
1841 census: in York Place, Bethnal Green, Middlesex: William (50, grocer), Sarah (45), Sarah (15), George (10), Elizabeth (8) and Martha (4). None born in Middlesex. [The two entries for Sarah must refer to Wiliam's wife and eldest daughter, both named Charlotte].
The final comment above is untrue - from Pat Bartlam, July 2008:
"I was just browsing the Minter family again and found that William Flood Minter and Charlotte Minter did have a daughter named Sarah. If you remember there was some confusion with the 1841 census where it showed Charlottes name as Sarah and we thought it also showed their daughter Charlottes name as Sarah.
Well apparently they had four daughters, Sarah being one of them born 1826. She married James Bennett Ashley in 1850. They are both mentioned in Charlottes will dated 1854."
On 21 August 1848 William was named as the victim at the Old Bailey trial of Alfred Johnstone. The following is taken from www.oldbaileyonline.org (found by Susan Claydon, May 2008) :
ALFRED JOHNSTONE , stealing 4 1/2 lbs. weight of cake, value, 4s. 3d.; the goods of William Flood Minter; having been before convicted; to which he pleaded
GUILTY . Aged 17.'97 Confined One Month.
When son Alfred was baptised in September 1841 William was described as a grocer of Grove Street.
William was buried as of Grove Street, Hackney, aged 60. The Will of William Flood Minter, Grocer of Hackney, Middlesex, dated 9 March 1850, is at the National Archives and a copy is on Minter Exchange.
1851 census: at Suffolk House, Grove St, Hackney, Charlotte Susan (50, widow, Grocer & general shopkeeper, born Copdock), Charlotte Susan (29, dressmaker, born Ipswich), Elizabeth (19, dressmaker, born Copdock), Martha Ann (15, born Ipswich) and George (21, house decorator, born Ipswich).
February 2008. Up until now, William Flood Minter's ancestry was unknown. The suggested parentage in the following email from Pat Bartlam needs to be authenticated from Parish Registers but is for the time being accepted as correct:
"...a few weeks ago I had an Email from Belinda Minter. She had found my tree on the Ancestry site.
She tells me that there was a Jonathon and Anne Minter living in Kesgrave around the mid 1700's.They had a son , William born 1745. He met and married a Martha Flood. They then had a son who became William Flood Minter.
Jonathon and Anne also had three daughters, Anne, born and died 1747, Elizabeth born ? married a Hartley and died 1839, and Mary born 1757, unmarried died 1844.
Apparently Belinda has been in touch with a lady in Australia who has three transcripts of Wills relating to our Minters. It seems Elizabeth and Mary owned a grocers shop and property in Hackney London which they left to their brother William. I think it is more likely it was left to their nephew William Flood Minter as their brother was dead by this time and later records show that William Flood and his wife Charlotte lived at the Grocers in London."
