  Notes	Robert lived in Elmstone in 1656 and paid Hearth Tax in 1664 at Elmstone for two hearths. He was the subject of bills of presentment made at Preston, Kent in 1664 for not paying church cess, the sum of ten shillings, and in 1666 for the sum of six shillings and eight pence. Robert was a prominent Quaker 1658 - 1680, protested against tithes by non-payment and suffering for so doing. He refused to bear or provide arms by handing them over but was reported to have left them out to be taken and thus avoiding breach. Robert's first wife died in 1656 and Robert later married Barbara. He was a yeoman of Bekesbourne, Kent and had tenament and lands at Staple, Kent. His Will dated 2 May 1685 was proved at Canterbury Archdeaconry Court on 9 October 1697. Its primary effects were: 1. Wife Barbara to have the use of Robert's household effects for the rest of her natural life; after Barbara's deathe the effects to pass to Robert's executors. 2. Son Richard to receive £6 per annum for the rest of his natural life, but the executors were granted the discretion of paying this in kind. 3. Robert's 4 grandchildren, the sons and daughters of Robert's daughter Martha (by then Martha CULMER) were to receive £5 each on reaching 21. However, this was revoked in the Codicil referred to below. 4. Daughter Martha to receive £10. 5. Daughter Barbara to receive 12 pence. 6. Sons George and Henry to be executors; if both shoud die before 21, Robert's grandchildren to act in their place (and to share all of Robert's estate equally). 7. Wife Barbara to receive Robert's property at Staple; this to pass to sons George and Henry after Barbara's death. The Codicil of 6 February 1693 revoked the bequest to Robert's 4 CULMER grandchildren.
