| Notes |
- John was originally John Minter HAILL, one of the children of William & Anna HAILL of Earl Stonham, Suffolk. He appeared with his parents in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (see father's Notes). It's unclear why John's second name was Minter (his mother's maiden name was PAWSEY so it didn't come from there).
In 1864, as John Minter HAILL, John married Jane Elizabeth HASKELL in London. This marriage cannot have lasted since in 1871 Jane was living (shown as 'married') as a boarder in London and John had become John MINTER and was living in Bolton, Lancashire with Mary BATES as his housekeeper. John and Mary eventually married and went to live in Australia. It's not known whether John and his first wife divorced, or whether Jane died before John remarried, or what became of Jane otherwise.
Interestingly, it looks as if the original surname on the 1871 census was erased and Minter written instead.
1871 census: at 12 Lyon Street, Little Bolton, Lancashire, John Minter (head, widower *, 27, house joiner, born Braintree, Essex), Mary BATES (housekeeper, unmarried, 24, formerly barmaid, born Salford, Lancashire), Ellen BATES (daughter, 2, born Bolton, Lancashire) and Annie BATES (1, born Bolton, Lancashire).
* John wasn't a widower in 1871 - his wife was still alive.
1881 census: at 81 Eskrick Street, Halliwell, Bolton, Lancashire, (all MINTER) John (head, 37, joiner, born Stoneham, Suffolk), Mary (wife, 34, born Ashton, Lancs), Ellen (12, scholar, born Bolton, Lancs), Annie (11, scholar, born Bolton, Lancs), William (9, scholar, born Bolton, Lancs), Lois (7, scholar, born Bolton, Lancs), Arthur (5, scholar, born Bolton, Lancs) and a 'visitor', Annie HAMPSON (3, born Halliwell, Lancs).
Although Mary is shown as John's wife in 1881, they didn't marry until Q4 1882. Several of John and Mary's children were baptised on the same day in 1880. They included a Martha Minter but as no other trace of her has been found she isn't included in the list of John's children.
Gail Gniewosz has found a shipping record showing that John (39), Mary (38) and their children Ellen (15), Annie (14), William (12), Lois (11), Arthur (8), John (1) and Bertha (infant) left Gravesend on 26 August 1884 on the steamer 'Dorunda'. They arrived at Brisbane, Australia on 21 October 1884.
The Victoria Public Records list of Unassisted Inward Passengers to Victoria 1852 - 1923 includes John (42) and Mary (40) Minter arriving in October 1883 on the 'Sikh'. It's not clear whether this was John and Mary on an exploratory visit.
John probably died in 1887 but the death certificate would confirm this. The death index record shows parents as William Minter and Hannah Robinson. Ann Doyle's theory for this is:
"As to how come John HAILL-cum-MINTER's mother's name is recorded as ROBINSON on his Death record. I have a theory:-
His father's name was certainly William. Maybe in family discussions he would have mentioned that his father's name was "William", so it would be natural for the family to assume he was "William Minter", as it is 'normal' for a son to bear the father's surname.
His mother's name (recorded as ROBINSON) is a bit more questionable. Certainly her name was Anna / Hannah.
In trying to find any link between PAWSEY and ROBINSON, I found 2 christenings on an Earl Stonham Parish Index: (at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engdorse/EARL_STONHAM4.html )
for Samuel and Elizabeth HAILL, children of Samuel HAILL and Sarah ROBINSON both baptised on 20 April, 1800. My theory is: It is possible that Samuel HAILL could be some relation to John Minter HAILL's father, William HAILL. Therefore Sarah ROBINSON may be connected."
