Notes |
- This small family group belongs to the Minter clan by adoption of the name rather than by its ancestry.
The first trace of the family was Charles Minter, who appeared in the 1911 census:
at 110 High Street, Wandsworth, London SW (8 rooms) as a servant, aged 22, born Germany, a butcher working for Joseph Brand, 42, also born in Germany. Joseph lived 'over the shop' with his wife, two sons, a boarder and two assistant butchers, one of whom was Charles Minter.
In 1913, as Charles Frederick Münter (with an umlaut) Charles married Doris "Dolly" Phyllis MANSFIELD. Although their first child was registered as MINTER the subsequent 4 children were registered as Münter although not necessarily with the umlaut.
1921 census: at 9, Pallador Place, Camberwell, London: James Frederick MANSFIELD (head, 57y 1m, born Camberwell, London, bricklayer with V Goad, 241 Camberwell Road, London SE5), Eliza Louisa MANSFIELD (wife, 58y 10m, born Lambeth, London, home duties). Ernest Edwin MANSFIELD (son, 20y 7m, single, born Camberwell, London, motor driver with Alford & Alders, motor body builders of Newington Butts, London SE1), Edith May MANSFIELD (daughter, 19y 6m, single, born Camberwell, London (druggists packer with Thomas Keating & Co, insect powder ---ter of 50-52 Union Street, London SE1), Karl C Münter (son in law, 33y 2m, married, born Württemberg, butcher (sausage maker) with Joe Brand of 110 High Street, Wandsworth, London SW), Doris Phylis Münter (daughter, 27y 2m, married, born Camberwell, London, home duties), Edith Hilda Münter (grandchild, 6y 6m, born Lambeth, London, whole time school), Hilda Rosine Münter (grandchild, 1y 6m, born Württemberg) and Charles Ernest Münter (grandchild, 5 months, born Camberwell, London).
On 5 December 1939, Karl Munter was exempted from internment until further order. The details shown on his official form are:
Born 23 April 1888, Weiptensburg [no such place - an attempt at Württemberg?]
Nationality: German
Address: 51 Mellitus Street, Shephers Bush, W12
Occupation: butcher
Employer: Lindsay's, 105 High Street, Putney
An exemption was also granted to Karl's wife Doris Phyllis, her nationality being "German. British Born" - she was born in Camberwell.
1939 Register: at 51 Mellitus Street, Old Oak Common, Hammersmith, London (all surnames with an umlaut)
Münter, K G born 23 April 1888, married, butcher (sausage maker)
Münter, D P born 16 Apr 1894, married, unpaid domestic duties
--- 2 closed records ---
Münter, C - [obscured by ink blot] born 8 Jan 1921, maintenance engineer; ARP
Charles Frederick' s death is in FreeBMD as Karl G MUNTER.
The son, Charles Ernest also married as Munter and his first daughter was registered with that name. The second daughter was however registered as Minter. Both daughters married as Minter and Charles Ernest's death, likewise. Charles Ernest's widow, Irene is probably she who appeared in the 2004 & 2007 Electoral Rolls as Irene E Minter.
