| Notes |
- The following information was provided by Suzanne Minter in 2005:
"I had an email from someone related to Henry Howe born c1830 Essendon, Hertfordshire who married a Martha Hill c1830, Hatfield Hertfordshire. Martha Hill had a child before she married Henry Howe, called Frances E Hill, born 1848 Wild Hill Hertfordshire. Frances E Hill born later adopted the name Howe."
By 1881, following George's death in 1878, Frances Emma had become Frances Emma KING (age given as 30) and was living as the wife of Herbert R KING (born c. 1859 at Marden, Kent), although no trace of their marriage has been found. Frances' two children, Emily (10) and Percy J (6) were living with Frances and Herbert, retaining their MINTER surname.
It's interesting to note that on 30 November 1877 a Walter MINTER was baptised, parents George and Frances Emma Minter. This looks fine but the BMD index contains the registration in Q4 1877 at Milton RD of a Walter King MINTER, which makes one wonder who the father was. I've listed Walter as George Minter's son. I've assumed that the death registration at Milton RD in Q2 1880 of 2 year-old Walter KING was of the same child.
By 1891, Frances Emma was to be found living at 39 Rock Street, Middlesbrough as Frances Emma MARSH, the wife of George MARSH. Frances' age was given as 38, George's as 26 (although he was more likely to have been 36), born Ospringe, Kent. Living with the couple were Albert KING (stepson, 8, born Sittingbourne, Kent), William KING (6, born Milton, Kent), Nellie MARSH (daughter, 3, born Sittingbourne) and Constance MARSH (2, born Milton). The first two of these children must have been born when Frances was living with Herbert KING. The second two were evidently fathered by George MARSH but were registered as MINTER.
In 1901, Frances was still in Middlesbrough, at 1 Chapmans Yard, with George MARSH. Frances' age was given as 44, George's as 45, born Faversham, Kent, a general labourer. Living with them were Albert KING (son, 19), Nellie MARSH (daughter, 13) and Constance MARSH (12).
It's possible to speculate on exactly what went on during the 1880s: did Herbert KING die or did Frances and George MARSH run away to Middlesbrough? In 1881, a George MARSH, aged 25, born Faversham, was living at 4 Wares Passage, Faversham with his wife Clara (25, born Gravesend) and daughter Ada A (2, born Sittingbourne). It looks as if George MARSH did abandon Clara because in 1891 she was living in Milton, Kent as Clara DUMMER, single, age 32, born Gravesend with her daughter Ada A DUMMER, 13, born Sittingbourne - they were boarding with 33 year-old widower Edward WOOD and his children.
