    Notes
    • Baptised as Wesleyan Methodist, the son of William Hodge of Collumpton, carpenter and of Ann his wife. Born 20 November 1827, baptised 9 December 1827.

1851 census: at 16 Mill Row, Dawlish, Devon, Mary COLEMAN (head, widow, 58, born Highweek, Devon) and John S HODGE (lodger, unmarried, 23, railway clerk, born Cullompton, Devon).

1861 census: at 17 Queen Street, St Marylebone, London, (all HODGE), John S (head, married, 33, clerk in publisher's office, born Cullompton, Devon), Anne (wife, 31, born Dawlish, Devon), W T J (son, 5, born Dawlish, Devon), John S (son, 3, born Dawlish, Devon) and Edward J (son, 1 (sic), born Marylebone).

The names etc of John and Anne's sons are confusing. If the records are to be believed, they had:
      - William Thomas John registered in Q3 1855, apparently entered on the 1861 census as WTJ, age 5
      - Edward James registered in Q3 1855, entered as Edward J in the 1861 census but with age 1, corrected in 1871 to 15
It would appear that William Thomas John and Edward James were twins
      - William Thomas John Elworthy registered in Q1 1858, seemingly John S on the 1861 census. Why give this son almost the same name as William Thomas John??

1871 census: at 7 Carlton Road, Kensington, London, (all HODGE), John S (head, married, 43, book publisher's clerk, born Cullompton, Devon), Anne (wife, 41, born Dawlish, Devon), Edward J (son, 15, clerk, born Dawlish, Devon), William (son, 13, scholar, born Dawlish, Devon) and Sophia A (daughter, 8, born Marylebone).

1881 census: at 57 Waterloo Road, Paddington, London, (all HODGE), John S (head, married, 53, commercial clerk and publisher, born Cullompton, Devon), Ann (wife, 51, born Dawlish, Devon), Edward (son, 25, accountant, born Dawlish, Devon), Anne (daughter in law, 25, born Richmond, Yorkshire), Gertrude (granddaughter, 2, born Paddington) and an unnamed grandson, 1 month, born Paddington) and William (son, 23, commercial clerk, born Dawlish). Also Eliza KING (15, general domestic servant).

John died in 1885. His widow appeared (as shown below) in the 1891 and later censuses but his son Edward James changed his name for some reason and appeared in the 1891 census as Edward J FIELDEN. Son William Thomas John Elworthy also changed his name - by 1901 he was William T ELWORTHY.

1891 census: Annie C HODGE (widow, 61, living on own means, born Dawlish, Devon) was at 8 Parkville Road, Fulham, London, with son-in-law William G BOVEY (head, 33, civil servant, GPO, born Gravesend, Kent), Sophia A BOVEY (wife, 28, born Paddington), Mabel F BOVEY (daughter 8, scholar, born Paddington) and Harold N BOVEY (son, 2, born Clapham, London).

1901 census: Annie HODGE (71, widow) still lived with son-in-law William G BOVEY, his wife (Anne's daughter Sophia) & family, now at 9 Benbow Road, Hammersmith.

1911 census: Annie HODGE (81, widow, was married for 57 years, 4 children, 3 still living) lived withhe daughter Sophia BOVEY, now a widow & family, at 9 Merton Avenue, Chiswick.

Anne died in 1914, aged 84.
