Notes |
- 1851 census: at 2 College Place West, Maidenstone Hill, Greenwich, Kent (all WHITE), Charles (head, widower, 39, solicitor's managing clerk, born Colchester), Caroline M (daughter, 5, born Lambeth, Surrey), Isabella (daughter, 3, born Greenwich, Kent), Charles (son, 8 months, born Greenwich, Kent), Mary (mother, widow, 62, formerly shoemaker, born Boxtead (sic), Essex). Also a general servant Elizabeth L GIBSON, 15, born St Lukes, Middlesex).
I've been unable to establish the details of Charles's family prior to those that appeared in the 1851 census. From the enhanced version of the BMD index, it's clear that the maiden name of the mother of Caroline, Isabella and Charles was PRIDDLE. But I've been unable to find a WHITE/PRIDDLE marriage before that which took place in Q1 1850. The death of a Mary WHITE was registered in Q1 1851, very probably Charles's wife. Perhaps what happened was that the 1850 marriage took place when Mary was terminally ill, a sort of late legitimisation of Charles and Mary's daughters. I wish it were possible to know for certain what happened but for the time being I'm assuming that Charles's first wife was Mary nee PRIDDLE and that they married in 1850.
Charles' mother Mary died before the 1861 census, probably in Q1 1855.
1861 census: Charles WHITE, now 49, a solicitors managing clerk, had remarried and lived at 9 Cleveland Terrace, Gloster Road, Islington with new wife Adela WHITE (47, a British subject born in Halifax, Nova Scotia), Caroline Mary WHITE (daughter, 15, apprentice milliner, born Lambeth) Isabella Emma WHITE (daughter, 13, scholar, born Greenwich) and Agnes WHITE (daughter, 6, scholar, born Islington). Also a servant aged 18 and mother-in-law Mary Ann ALPORT (widow, 79, proprietor of houses, born London).
1871 census: at 3 Sanford Place, West Hackney, Hackney St John, London, Charles WHITE, head, 59, solicitors managing clerk, born Colchester, Essex), Adela WHITE (wife, 57, born Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Agnes WHITE (daughter, 16, born Islington). Also a servant, Martha HOLLAND, 18.
1881 census: at 7 Sunnyside, Mortimer Street, Herne, Kent, Charles WHITE, head, 69, no profession, trade or calling, born Colchester, Essex), Adela WHITE (wife, 67, born Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Agnes WHITE (daughter, 26, born Islington). Also a general servant, Naomi Emily HARRISON, 16.
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995:
WHITE Charles, Personal Estate £2,900 11s 7d. 12 March 1891 The Will with a Codicil of Charles White late of Melbourne House Wood Green in the County of MIddlesex Gentleman who died 28 January 1891 at Melbourne House was proved at the Principal Registry by Adela White of Melbourne House Widow the Relict the sole Executrix.
1891 census: at Melbourne House, Tottenham, London, Adela WHITE (boarder, widow, 77, living on own means, born Halifax, Nova Scotia), Harriett G ADAMS (wife, married, 58, nurse, born Gamorganshire) and a general domestic servant, Hellen Eliza MAY, 21.
