Notes |
- Bob White has William's birthplace as Scotland. Other sources, including The Tillman Family Tree at genealogy.com, have his birth at Caroline County, VA (but Caroline County didn't exist in 1708). The Tillman tree shows William Julius as the son of Walter Riddle, born 1686 in Roxburghshire, Scotland, died 23 May 1738 in Somerset County, NJ. I haven't verified these details.
The following notes are copied from the Tillman tree. The final paragraph suggests a different ancestry for William: I haven't checked this.
"William Julius Riddle owned lands in Caroline and Lunenburg Counties, Virginia between 1734-1762 where he registered a slave prior to moving to North Carolina. On July 10, 1747 it was ordered by the Court that John Brunskill pay William Riddle 955 pds. of tobacco for 7 days attendence and coming and going 65 miles four times in addition to 4 shillings for ferriages. On July 24, 1753 he bought 400 acres of land on the north side of Roanoake River near Horse Ford from Joseph Hickman for the sum of 18 pds. current money of Virginia. He and his wife Elizabeth sold this same land on January 25, 1762 to Richard Rochett (or Rochet). He was in Orange County, North Carolina as the overseer assigned by a court order in August 1764 to open and repair a road from Hodges Ford to Capeland's Landing on the Haw River; Cary Minter and 9 others were also part of this crew. It appears that William Julius owned several hundred acres on both sides of Deep River at Little Buffalo Creek, also land located in the fork of the Cape Fear River. Some of these lands were later sold to John and Anthony Minter.
The 7 sons of William Julius and Elizabeth Nancy (Minter) Riddle were of good average height and weighed between 200 and 300 pounds and all had the characteristics of the Scottish people and all 7 served on the American side during the Revolutionary War, receiving no injuries. A John Nathan Riddle has passed on a story that the first Riddle ancestor came to America as a stow-away on a ship; but who was this person? Maybe a Joanthan Minter age 16 years from London to Virginia in 1635, along with a William Riddle, on a ship commanded by Captain Leonard Betts.
Some information by Frances Willess indicates that Julius died in 1766, St. James Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia and his will was probated in August 1766, Orange County, North Carolina. She also lists William Julius's parents as John Riddle abt 1670-1738, Caroline Co. VA and Ann (unknown)."
The sons of William and Nancy are as shown in the Dellinger Web Site at myheritage.com, February 2012.
Much more on the history of the Riddle family is contained in "Branches of one Riddle family tree" by Doratha Riddle Marsh. This was originally publised in 1981, followed by a supplement in 1983 and both can be seen online at the LDS website.
