    Notes
    • Janet Webb has provided the following information about her grandfather:

      1898
Harry, 15, enlisted in the Queen's Bays Regiment, a Cavalry Regiment of the
2nd Dragoons Guards and went to fight in the 2nd Boer War in South Africa. He
didn't return to England until his discharge in 1905 when he found work as a
Railway Plate Layer. He had 4 sisters, Sonia Louisa born in 1885, Nellie born
in 1890, Ida born in 1892 and Jinny born in 1895.

      1912
Harry and Bessie were married on 6th July, 19l2 at Shoreditch Register Office.
Witnesses to their marriage were L. Bassett and Harry Lupson.

Harry and Bessie lived at 29 Bookham Street, Shoreditch. Their only child,
my mother, Ida Louisa was born 2 months after their marriage on 12th October,
1912 at 21 Harman Street, Shoreditch.

      1914

Harry was re-called to his Regiment at the outbreak of The Great War ( 1st
World War) and went to fight in the trenches in France and Belgium at the
battles of the Somme, Ypres, Mons and Marne until the war was over when
Harry was honourably discharged having been mildly "gassed" in the trench
      warfare and he returned home.

      1934
Bessie died on 12th April 1934 aged 53 in The Royal Free Hospital, Pancras, of
      (a) Pulmonary Embolus (b) Septic Emboli from Pelvic Abcesses, (c) Radium
Bums of the Uterus after heavy blood loss.
      N.B.
Doses of Radium through needles inserted into the Uterus was the new
treatment for Cancer of the Uterus at the time and the strength of the dose had
      been miscalculated.

Bessie was buried in East London Cemetery, Wanstead.

At the time of Bessie's death, Harry was living at 22, Chatham Avenue, Nile
Street, Shoreditch. He was a Builder's Labourer. He continued to live there until
1963 when he was admitted to the Royal Chelsea Pensioners Home for old
      soldiers.
Harry died on 9th August , 1967 aged 84 of Bronchitis and Pneumonia at the
Chelsea Pensioners Hospital. He was buried there with Military Honours as
befitted one of "The Old Contemptibles" as they were known'. His war medals
were donated to the Hospital Museum.

      N.B.
My mother remembered the flat where my Grandfather lived in "The Buildings"
as one room with a curtained-off corner where she slept until she married my
father (who had to pay £50 to marry my mother because she was helping with
the finances by working in the "Box Factory")

I remember it because when my sister and I were little girls we used to make the
journey every Saturday across London to visit. It had a huge wrought iron set of
gates across both ends to stop any through traffic. Concrete stairs went up to
Grandad's flat. There was a toilet and washbasin on each landing for the
residents. The front doors opened onto the street with no gardens anywhere. In
summer people would bring chairs out and sit at the front doors.
