Notes |
- George was baptised as 'the baseborn son of Harriet Minter of St Mildreds Canterbury'. There is something of a mystery about George: he was, as this record shows, baptised on 16 January 1813. However, a 'George Minter of Blean', aged 3 weeks, was buried at St Comus and St Damien in the Blean on 4 February 1813. Cliff Minter thinks the 3 week-old infant was in fact the George who was baptised on 16 January 1813. He further thinks that the George who married in 1834 and died in 1844 was another child, born about the same time, probably not Harriet's natural child, which Harriet nevertheless "adopted" and brought up. A motive for this could have been that the natural father of the first child (the one who died) was contributing to his child's upbringing and that Harriet did not want to forego this benefit. It must be stressed that this is all speculation.
A cordwainer of Rosemary Lane, Canterbury in 1835, a shoemaker of Rosemary Lane, Canterbury in 1838.
1841 census: at Turnagain Lane, Canterbury, George (30, cordwainer), Mary (25), Elizabeth (5) and George (3).
Jan 2007: Suzanne Minter has a copy of George's death certificate: he died on 22 September 1844 at 20 minutes before 4 pm, Turnagain Lane, St Alphage. He was 32 and a shoemaker and died of dropsy. His wife Mary was present. Death registered on 25 September 1844.
George was buried as of Turnagain Lane, aged 32.
1851 census: at 9 Turnagain Lane, Canterbury, Mary Ann (widow, 41, tailoress) and George (13, errand boy) were living with Mary Ann's mother Ann LAWRENCE (74, parish relief, born Reculver, Herne, Kent).
1861 census: Mary Ann MAY have been living as a 'visitor' in Outer Wall, Whitstable with John L and Elizabeth BEAL and their two children. However, that Mary A Minter was said to be 65, a cook. She was though a widow born in Whitstable.
1871 census: Mary Ann was probably living as a 'boarder' in Black Griffin Lane, St Peters, Canterbury with her son George and his family. She is shown as Mary A Minter, a widow aged 58, a cook, born in Whitstable.
1881 census: the entry at Wests Passage, St Dunstan's Street, St Dunstans, Canterbury for Ann Minter, widow, 70, born Whitstable may refer to Mary Ann.
