    Notes
    • The following comes from the Ash Family Reconstitution Forms supplied by Cally Scheider in December 2012. The source quoted there is "Cartwright and Kelsey", the Ash village school now a Church Aided Primary School. This information hasn't been verified by me.
"11.Feb.1881/admitted: 9.Jly.1883/to Standard 4 though she failed in 2 subjects in Standard 3: 5.Jun/late: 29.Oct.1884/sent to help in the Infant School:19.Jly.1886/acting as a monitor"
"18.Mar.1881/kept from school by order of the doctor"

1891 census: in Street End, Ash, Kent, Ruth (17, housemaid) with Austen Gardner, brewer. Sister Elizabeth was the cook.

In 1901, living in Ash with husband and son Harry Louis HOWARD.

June 2007: Jane Weller, whose husband is a descendant of Ruth and Harry Howard, sent pictures of Ruth and Harry thought to have been taken at the time of their wedding. Jane has also added the following:
"I suspect Ruth was quite tall and slender as [Ruth & Harry Howard's daughter] Blanche* was just like that. Ruth and her sister Elizabeth, I believe, were the goddaughters of Gertrude Gardiner whose brother owned Ash Ales. The Gardiners lived at Street End which is where Ruth worked and was semi brought up by the Gardiners as Hannah Minter died at quite a young age. She and Daniel are buried at Ash in the grave which is the first on the right through the gate." * Blanche Weller nee Howard was Jane Weller's husband's mother.
And the following, in a later email:
"Daniel Minter worked for Austen Gardener who owned Gardener's Ash Ales. The brewery was behind the house at Street End. In one of the photos [which are on the Minter website] you can see the oast house behind the house at Street End. In the 1871 census Daniel and wife Hannah Elgar and two of their three children, Elizabeth and Emily, are living in the house of Austen Gardener, along with his sister Gertrude Gardener. There would appear to be more than just a working relationship between the two. I do not know the history but my husband, as a child used to go with Ruth to the brewery where, apparently, they would stop the bottling and put a special lot of bottle tops on so that he ended up with one of each colour! Harry Howard, who married Ruth Minter, his father owned the Red Lion Inn at Ash and ran the horse-drawn coach buses between London and Sandwich. I suspect the Red Lion was probably quite a good client of Gardener's Ash Ales."
      July 2007: Cliff Minter adds:
"My great grandfather was another frequent visitor to Ash brewery. His sister Ellen's husband worked there and Harry was said to have gone to sample the brew. It was one of the Gardiner family that had Harry locked up whilst he worked for them at Littlebourne. I can remember the brewery but it has long since closed."
