Stanley's name appears in a list of members of the 4th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment reported missing in Malaya on 15 February 1942.
A Wikipedia article says:
"...the 4th and 5th Suffolks included, were originally to be sent to Egypt but instead were sent to Singapore to help strengthen the garrison there after Japan entered the war in December 1941. In early 1942, both the 4th and 5th battalions fought briefly in the defence of Singapore against the Japanese, with the 18th Division, before British Commonwealth forces on that island surrendered on 15 February 1942 under the orders of Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival. Men from the two battalions suffered great hardship as POWs and were forced to participate in the construction of the Burma Railway."
Several documents referring to Stanley as a Prisoner of War have been found by James Earley and at findmypast.co.uk. The documents show that Stanley was interned in (at least) three prison camps including Changi (Singapore) and Canu Jungle (Thailand). It was from the latter that POWs were forced to work on the Burma-Thai railway. Stanley was in Thailand when he died from beri-beri and dysentery on 27 June 1943. His cousin Arthur James suffered the same fate, having also joined the 4th Suffolks and been caught up in the surrender of allied forces in Singapore.
