- Obituary from www.feigumfh.com:
December 10, 1914 - July 17, 2011
Eleanor May was born December 10, 1914 to Catherine (Sullivan) and William Anderson in Montrose, SD. The growing and struggling family moved often during her early years. Her high school years were attended in Sioux Falls, Harrold and her senior year in Aurora where she was then living and housekeeping for Fr. E.J. Coyne at that time.
Eleanor met and married Gilbert (Bert) Hunsley, October 15, 1938 in Denver, Colorado where they were both living at the time. After the fifth child was born, they returned to South Dakota and settled on a small farm just outside of Pierre where they raised their family of eight. Eleanor was a very active supporter of the family with her gardening, milking of cows, etc. and in l954 she began working as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Hospital. After ten years there she was encouraged by staff to pursue her nursing degree which she did by working during the day and studying and going to classes in the evening. She earned her LPN degree in 1965 and nearly tripled her salary at that time. She continued to work at the hospital until her 70th birthday.
Eleanor was an active member of Sts Peter and Paul church, Catholic Daughters of America, the St. Agnes Altar Society Band, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Pierre Senior Citizens, the local Happy Hour Club and Birthday Club. She loved to play bingo and cards (she won the last two games she played with family) and to travel. After their retirements, she and Bert traveled to each of the 50 states. Sharing time with her family and many great-grandchildren was her greatest joy in the later years of her life. She was a gentle but firm example for all her family with her deep faith, prayerful example and love of family and quiet, gentle way.
She is survived by her children, Lilla May, Pierre; Duane (Diana), Pierre; Lavern (Georgia), Humphrey, NE; Raymond (Lynne), Pierre; Dale (Kathy), Pierre; Mark (Betty), Spearfish; Daughter-in-Law, Nancy, Pierre; sisters, Irene Myers, Gunnison, CO.; Sister Evangeline Anderson, Yankton, SD; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dolan, Grand Island, NE; Effie Hunsley, Pierre; 22 grandchildren, 58 great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bert, sons Leonard and Don, grandchildren, Scott and Mark Aaron, great-granddaughter, Olivia, brother Joe, sisters Dorothy, Evelyn Vivian and June, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
