    Notes
    • James's ancestry is uncertain. When he married Gladys Dorothy NEWELL in January 1916 he did so as James MINTON. The only definite clues to his ancestry is that he gave his age as 20 and his deceased father's name as John MINTON.

No James MINTER was registered in 1895/96 that has not been accounted for in another Minter family. So it must be assumed that James really was named MINTON. If so, a possible family for him has been identified:
The birth of a James Henry S MINTON was registered in Q1 1896 at Wolstanton, Staffordshire. He appears in the 1901 census:
at 11 Knappers Buildings, Kidsgrove (part of Wolstanton), John MINTON (43, below ground coal miner, born Hanley, Staffs), Sarah E (wife, 42), Caleb (24, above ground colliery worker), Esther (19), Samuel (17, butcher's assistant), Annie (14), Sarah E (12), Nellie (7), James H (5) and John T (1). The birthplace of John's wife and all the children is given as Kidsgrove, Staffs.
The family appears in the 1911 census in the Wolstanton district (these details are taken only from the index): John (54), Sarah Ellen (51), 'Cabel' (34), Esther (30), Sarah Ellen (21), Nellie (18), John Thomas (11) and Daisy (8). The 1911 census also has James Henry Smallwood MINTON (15) living in Wolstanton but not apparently with the family.

This James Henry Smallwood MINTON is the right age to have been the James MINTON who married Gladys Newell in 1916 but it seems unlikely, especially since on the 1916 birth certificate of Ronald James Minter, James's Christian names are shown as James Edward.

A James MINTON, private no. 210888 of the Staffordshire Regiment was awarded the 1914 -18 Victory Medal. If however the statement on the 1916 birth certificate of Ronald James Minter was correct, ie that James was in the Royal Engineers, then this medal was probably awarded to a different person, possibly the James Henry Smallwood Minton referred to above.

The final mystery is why all James and Gladys's children were registered as MINTER.

When James re-married in 1941 he did so as MINTER.
