Robert's obituary appeared in The Civil Service Pensioner, Winter 1979/80 (clipping from Cliff Minter):
Regrettably another of our dedicated stalwarts of the old school has passed on. Robert Minter, who was editor of 'The Civil Service Pensioner' from 1959 to 1977 died peacefully at home on 3rd November 1979. His lengthy period of Office proved how well he served The Alliance. Robert kept the lines of communication open during the fighting years up to 1971, when a restless and frustrated membership protested vigorously against a Goverment which took 3½ - 4 years to decide whether or not there should be a pension increase. Robert's job was to reassure the membership that the Alliance, despite continual political pressure at the time, was doing its best. That Robert did admirably and his quartely publications helped immensly to build the solid foundation on wich The Alliance thrives today. There are not many of the "old-un's" from these years left, but the memory of Robert, among those who remain, will be held in high regard. G.G.P.
[The Civil Service Pensioner's Alliance is still active in 2011]

The following appeared in the Isle of Thanet Gazette 15th January 1943. Thanks to Suzannah Foad for this.
"A GRAND OLD MAN"
TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MR. W. MINTER
A grand old man who radiated happiness and goodwill was the tribute paid to the late Mr. Wm. Minter, of 2, Madeira-road, Margate, at the funeral service held at Holy Trinity Church, Margate, on Saturday morning.
Mr. Minter, who was for thirty-three years collector of taxes in Margate and an ardent chess player, died at Canterbury the previous Wednesday in his eighty-eighth year. The service was conducted by the Vicar (the Rev. J. B. Cowell) and included the hymn, " For all Thy Saints, 0 Lord," the twenty-third Psalm, and the reading of a passage from the Wisdom of Solomon. The organist (Mr F Wake) played "Hear my Prayer " (Mendelssohn) and "O rest in the Lord " (Mendelssohn). Paying tribute to Mr. Minter, the Vicar said they had come there to salute and give thanks for a noble life. It should be a service of praise and thanksgiving, for William Minter had gone triumphantly to his rest. No words of his could do justice to the tribute which those present and many others unable to be present would like to pay to such a grand old man. He could only speak from slender experience, but he knew that throughout his long life, whether as a public servant, as a husband or father, or as a friend, he endeared himself to all who met him or knew him. He radiated happiness and goodwill. That church was very dear to him, and he worshipped there very regularly for a great many vears. Its work and life and interests were ever his. He (the Vicar) supposed that in his contact with the church laid the secret of his joyous personality.
Mourners present were : Mrs. Morphy, Mrs. Atkins, Mrs. Bellerby and Mrs. Hook (daughters), Mr. F. Hook (son-in-law), Miss Bellerby and Mrs. H. C. Doughty (granddaughters), Mr. Edward Minter (brother), Miss Murton (niece), Mr. John Rolle (nephew), and Mrs. Duss-Baker.
Among others in the church were the Mayor (Councillor F. J. Cornford), Alderman F. L,. Pettman, J .P., C.C. and Mrs. Pettman, Councillor H. G. Pedder, Mr. and Mrs. A. Hodges, Mr. G. C. Golder, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Doughty, Mr. B. J. Garraway, ].P., Mr. N. V. Morgan, Mr. F. Bywater., Mr. H. Waters, Mr. W. L. Langston, Mrs. M. Venner, Mr. A. J. Vicary, Mrs Griffiths, Mr. Pyle, Mrs. Murton and Mr. R. McConnell, Mr. C. Murton and Mr. W. J. Withers (representing the Inland Revenue Department).
The interment followed at Margate Cemetery.

The Advertiser & Echo (Kent) of 12 Jan 1943 carried a brief report of William's death which noted his lifetime hobby of chess. He was a pioneer of Margate Chess Club and brought many famous players to the town to take part in open chess tournaments.

11719 Pressley appeared in censuses up to 1940 with his parents (latterly his widowed mother). It's quite a coincidence that Pressley had a sister called Janie May. Minter, Pressley (I6562)

11721 Prior to marrying Alice in 1920 Richard was evidently married to Emily TOWNSEND and had at least 6 children. However, I can't find Richard's marriage to Emily, the births of some of his children or Emily's death. I found Richard and Emily in the 1901 census (see below) but not in earlier censuses or in the 1911 census.

Minter, Mary Ann (I30)

11731 Privately baptised.

From Graham Minter's Minter Story, June 2012:
" may have married Daniel Cowey. In 1851 a Daniel Cowey, a 56-year-old agricultural labourer from Levington was living at Mill House with his 52-year-old wife, Martha, who was born in Eyke, and their three sons, all born in Levington: William (20), George (17) and James (15). However, we have found no record of the marriage. " In 1841 Daniel (45), Martha (42) and 5 sons, Jonathan (15), William (10), George (7), James (5), and Ishmael (3) lived in Levington, Suffolk. In 1861 Martha COWIE, 63, born Eyke, widow of an agricultural labourer, lived in Upper Street, Walton Felixstowe, as a visitor with James and Dorcas SMITH.

The death of a Martha Cowie was registered at Woodbridge in Q1 1865 - may or may not refer.
Minter, Martha (I51)

11732 Privately baptised.

The fact that on the 1851 census Samuel's birthplace is shown as Eye, Suffolk casts a small amount of doubt over whether that Samuel was the one born in Eyke in 1795. However there is no doubt that the subject of the 1861 census is the same person as the subject of the 1851 census, and in 1861 Samuel's birthplace is shown as Eyke. For that reason the subject of the 1851 and 1861 censuses is assumed to be Samuel born in 1795 of William and Elizabeth (Johnson).

1841 census: in Handford Road, Ipswich St Peter, Suffolk, Samuel (45, carpenter), Sarah (35), Caroline (15), Sarah (10), Elizabeth (8), William (6) and John (3).

1851 census: in St Georges St, Ipswich St Matthew, Samuel (55, carpenter journeyman), Sarah (48), Caroline (24, tambour worker), Elizabeth (18, dress maker), William (16, brokers porter), John (13, scholar), Samuel (9, scholar) and Elizabeth C (1).

Elizabeth C is shown as daughter but it's unlikely that Samuel's wife Sarah was the mother since she would have been about 48 when Elizabeth was born. Elizabeth's true identity is a mystery *. Her birth certificate might help: it seems likely that her birth was that registered in Q1 1850 at Ipswich (12/395) as Elizabeth Clara Bagett Baggett. No trace of her has been found in the 1861 or 1871 censuses but she reappeared in 1874 when, was Elizabeth Clara Bagget Minter, she married John Best NEWTON, giving her father as Edward Bagget Minter (deceased), gentleman.
* In his Minter Story of June 2012, Graham Minter speculates that Elizabeth may have been the illegitimate daughter of Caroline or Elizabeth Maria Minter.

1861 census: in Norwich Road, Ipswich St Matthew, Samuel (65, carpenter), Sarah H (58) and Samuel (19, plumber & glazier).

1871 census: in Balkerne Hill, St Peter, Colchester, Essex, Sarah (widow, 68, annuitant) and Samuel (28, plumber &c).

1881 census (indexed as WINTER by ancestry.com): at 3 Beaufort Street, Ipswich St Matthew, Sarah (widow, 78, annuitant) and a lodger, Georgiana DUNN (widow, 74, born Westminster).

1891 census (indexed as MONTEZ by ancestry.com): at 52 Johnt Street, Ipswich St Clement, Sarah Harlow (widow, 89) with her son-in-law Alfred WARREN (57, brewers servant, born Bramford, Suffolk) and daughter Caroline (64).

Graham Minter has a copy of Samuel's death certificate which shows the cause of death as bronchitis.
Minter, Samuel (I50)

11733 Privately baptised.

When children were baptised in 1832, 1833, 1835, 1842, William's occupation was carpenter.

1841 census: in Eyke, William (40, carpenter), Mary Jane (38), William (11), John (9), Matilda (7), Jane (5), Robert (3) and Sarah (1).

In 1849 William became insolvent - see Graham Minter's Minter Story, June 2012.
